Editorial

What a month there has been so much happening I haven’t even had time to be in the workshops with my camera. The show season is really in full swing at the moment and I hope to see lots of you at the shows supporting the club.

Chairman’s Report

Welcome everyone. There are lots going on at the present. We have just had our Bike show. This was another successful event. Not financially, but in the way of publicity for the club, a number of new members and also prospective members.

The club had an outing at Rothbury. This was a two-day event and a number of us went up on the Friday evening and camped, returning on the Sunday. Stephen Hudson, our newsletter editor, will probably have something to add on this event. We have also visited Raby Castle, another superb event.

We took the 1912 Humber to Raby Castle and she was well looked at. She always attracts a lot of attention. Thanks to all who have helped keep her in trim. Alf Bailey does a sterling job keeping her spick and span. Thanks to Norman Rose and Ian Thomas for the repair and remounting of the steering wheel. The gearlever/linkage and the brakes also came in for attention along with the fuel problems/leaks. Thanks also to Sean Hodgson, who always seems to get to tow the Humber to events. His is the only classic car with a tow hitch that is capable of doing the job.

Since doing this work on the Humber and getting the car running, it has raised some more work to be done to get it right. I think it most worthwhile however, as it is such a good publicity agent for the club.

Happy rallying everyone.
Keith Noble

Raby Gala

It was another one of them weeks when the weather was fantastic until we got to the weekend and it had changed to overcast and a lot cooler. There was a reasonable turnout of cars we took the Humber with us for the club stand which got a lot of attention. With all kinds of things to see and do it made a really good day out and thank you to Paul Pearson for giving us a ride in the Fire Engine.

Club Meeting Summary

Attendance was down due to the football but it wasn’t too bad even though the football was.

Rubbish is still a problem in the workshops could people please tidy up after themselves and take rubbish home. It cost the club every time the rubbish builds up to get a skip to get rid of it all. If things have to keep happening like this then it might get to the point that subs have to go up to cover costs. This goes to prove how important it is to take rubbish home.

The four post ramp is a fantastic tool for us all to use and makes jobs easier for all of us. Again we need to point out to people that any oil drained from your car needs to be taken away. We have got oil building up in the workshop which costs a lot of money to get rid of. Please make sure you bring your own containers to be able to drain your oil into. It is unacceptable to drain oil into fire buckets and just left for other people to clean away which had to be done in the last few weeks. If this continues then stricter monitoring of the ramp will have to come into force this is for the good of the club fire safety is a big issue throwing a bucket of oil on a fire isn’t going to help.

Due to ratchet straps going missing off the car trailer members hiring the trailer will have to supply there own straps. Nine straps have been supplied by the club over the last few months and all of them have gone missing. This is something the club can’t sustain and will have to stop.

Committee meeting report

The May open day was a fantastic success a nice profit was made and a good turn out even though it was a bit on the cold side. We should see the benefits of that over the next few months with appearance of new workshop equipment for use in the workshops.

The mini show is going ahead it is being held by The North East Mini Club at the club on the 30th July. All that is going to be open is the canteen and the toilets so it doesn’t need to be a massive tidy up around the club but it would be good if it was clean and tidy incase people want a guided tour like they did on the bike show day.

A new machine is going be bought it has been suggested by a few members. It is a deep throat swaging machine it will arrive very shortly for more info ask Norman

The lathe that no doubt lots of you have seen in the machine room is under repair. We have just bought It and it needs a little tlc but should be up and running very shortly. It is in good hands and by the time it is up and running it will be in good order for us all to benefit from. Some of our members need to have a little more patience to let things be sorted out. But its no good complaining things don’t work when no one is here to help fix them things don’t happen by themselves around here.

Bike Show

It was so hot I think it even put the bikers off. It was a strange day the weather was too good I think it was too hot to do anything. The turnout wasn’t as good as last year for some reason but we had more traders than last year which is good. Hopefully we can learn from this and improve the show again for next year. I think Brian Hodgson needs a pat on the back for making sure the workshops were sorted with our usual helpers on the Saturday. Lack of support from our bike section members was very apparent! Thanks to Judith, Kieth, Alan and Eind for running the kitchen on the day.

Sunderland Car Clubs Seaburn Show

Another fantastic day at Seaburn show ground at least the sun was out this year last year it rained from start to finish. The field filled up over the day and with the beach just over the road what more could you ask for (the beach kept the kids quiet for a while anyway). With quiet a few of our members involved with Sunderland car club and others on the scimitar club stand it meant that we had plenty of members on the field from the restoration club.

The International Mini Meet
Poldice, Poland 2006-07-14

It all seemed like a good idea at the time 12 people 7 cars and a van. All travelling from Washington services to Poland and back again. We had everything booked for along the way we had the supplies with us in the van incase anything went wrong. Every eventuality had been thought of so what could possibly go wrong we were about to travel a round trip of about 3000 miles over ten days in MINIS.

We couldn’t have planned it better it should have all worked like clockwork BUT nothing ever happens like that. People got tired due to the amount of driving and due to the size of the group of people there was differences of opinions about the way things should have been done.

Tie rod coming undone is a slight problem Parked in the centre of Brussels we weren’t lost honest
After a few days of problems and trying to sort them out as we went things started to look up we were almost at our destination. We had travels through some countries that none of us had seen before and started to enjoy our surroundings. The next step was the event itself, It was a camping event and your entry included your meals as well. It was different to say the least local polish food is something to be experienced but for the chef to be preparing it for so many people and outside as well I think he deserved a medal.

Overall it has to be one of the biggest adventures of my life and something I will never forget. I had some unforgettable experiences and met people from all over the world who had a common interest. I also made some friends on that journey that will be friends for life. It was a fantastic journey that went without too many problems we came back with one less car which got recovered by the breakdown insurance and was fixed after it got back.

Will I do it again? Well the IMM is being held in Denmark next year so you never know I’m sure you will all find out in due time

Steve Hudson

Rothbury

This was a show that we advertised to the club and decided to have a weekend away I would like to thank everyone who came and made it a great weekend no matter what the weather. Its one of the shows that you go to and learn so much about a certain vehicle that you had never taken any interest in before. You will all have to ask Steve Laverick all about it because he knows all there is to know now after that weekend.

Even though the weather was as chilly as you can see by the front cover we still had some brave members that went in the river and had scars to prove it for a week or so after.
